I got up this morning to discover that my son had apparently managed to give the betta "food" yesterday, too. Yesterday afternoon he managed to get a full 1 pound container of parmesean cheese, which he'd decided was appropriate food for all the critters. I found a pile in the floor and in each water bowl for the dogs, some in the one fish tank that's running right now, and the cages for the rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rat. This is the effect of leaving a 3 year old under the ...

So, I have noticed for the last few days that I have had a couple of fish in one tank with clamped fins (stress, obviously), so I took a test strip which tests for NO3, NO2, GH, KH, and pH. When I checked Sunday, the NO3. NO2 and pH was all high, so I did a vaccuum of all the gravel (normally I only do half since this was in the 125g) and a 1/4 water change. the NO3 and NO2 came down a little, and the pH was still alkaline. I let it sit because the fish were looking better. Today (two days later) ...

I'm trying to plan out what I need and how much it will be before I start my SW tank so I won't be suprised... The "live sand" that lfs in my area sell is at least $20 and I have a 55G tank... could be pricey... Do I have to buy that or can I buy sand from say Lowes or Home Depot that is a fine grit and will it still get populated by the bacteria and such?? Also, would said sand be harmful to sand sifting critters??

Any help would be mucho mucho apreciated
