I'm trying to plan out what I need and how much it will be before I start my SW tank so I won't be suprised... The "live sand" that lfs in my area sell is at least $20 and I have a 55G tank... could be pricey... Do I have to buy that or can I buy sand from say Lowes or Home Depot that is a fine grit and will it still get populated by the bacteria and such?? Also, would said sand be harmful to sand sifting critters??

Any help would be mucho mucho apreciated

I tested my 180g a couple days ago and detected ammonia. So, doing what i always do, did a 25% water change. Over night the water turned into milk, and the ammonia was even higher. I freaked out cause all my fish were having trouble breathing and put them all in different tanks. Well, this morning i woke up and tested the water again, ammonia is literally off the charts. Thank god i got my fish out. But, can anyone tell me why a tank that has always been stable, just crash like that. And, why ...

Hey all, Ty for any help given.

I was wondering, since I want to run a FOWLR tank with the starter fish list that nitty gave me (Surgeonfish (tangs)

Rabbitfish

Clowns/Damsels

must smaller Wrasse

Anthias

Hawkfish

Dottybacks

Blennies

Gobies)

Do I need to have any circulation pumps, like Koralias? If so, do I need a wave maker too?

Also, I definitely want at least 1 clown or a mated pair of percs.. Should I or could I put a anemone in a FOWLR tank for them?

Thanks guys.

Found a 24 gal nano today with stand and everything for 100.00. The catch was, the ballast was bad. Instead of paying 80.00 bucks for a new ballast, my wife and i gutted the hood and put in LED lighting. It looks great. We got the blue and white, 12 bulb count LED's for 117.00 at Dallas North. It looks great for the price. Will post pics once it's cycled and all coral added.

Cycling a Saltwater Marine Aquarium

Unlike most freshwater fish, saltwater fish are very sensitive to water quality and the presence of chemicals such as ammonia and nitrites. As a result, it is a bad idea to set up a saltwater aquarium in one day and toss fish into it. Some fish might survive, but there is a good chance that they won't.

When a new saltwater tank is set up, it must provide for the filtration ...

So, I have been planning on changing my 110G FW cichlid male show tank to a SW tank. I really am just interested in a fish only setup with lots of rock for places to hide. It's a 110T with a overflow to an acrylic sump. I have bio balls, and mechanical filteration now. What else do I need to have besides a powerhead. Is a protein skimmer essential for a fish only tank, or necessary? Add biomax, or ceramic cylinders? any input helps!

The BIG question I have, which I haven't heard asked as of ...
