I am contemplating moving the Red Tail, Black Banded Leporinus and perhaps Pictus into the cichlid tank? Or maybe another tank for just them... ...

Decided I needed to put some money into buying a decent light system if I want to keep my plants alive. Going to convert my 40 Breeder into a planted tank. I figured the deeper the tank, the better I can aquascap with driftwood and rocks. I need help setting this up...since I'm a cichlid guy, I know about planted tanks.

Lighting: High Output T5's vs. Power Compacts? Any thoughts?

I know I need the 6700 and not the 10K/Actinic Lighting... but that's where my scope of knowledge ends.

It's been a month of waterlogging a 16" piece of malaysian driftwood. Its pretty thick, like 4" around and its been in my 20 gallon for a month now. It still floats whenever I take the rock of of it. I boiled it for 3 hours and it still floats. Is there any other fast way to waterlog it? The tannins are completely gone at this point.

There is a bunch of algae that had developed on the glass in my planted tank. I put plecos in there but did not work. I tried removing it by using a aquarium brush without prevailing. I had to use a razor underwater to remove it (which is a bad thing of course). Anything that can be used to get rid of it? This algae is pretty hard to get rid of, its like coraline algae. I have tons of plants in there already that suck up all the nutrients and plecos dont work. Oh, and theres no algae anywhere ...

I am supposed to get the 100 gallon salt tank for x-mas, but due to funds it's not going to happen on time. So, the hubby bought me something I have wanted for a while: a 10 gallon that will become a planted tank to grow snails for my Puffer friends! Yea! I will post pics of my progress, but I thought this would be a good thread on how to start a planted tank from scratch for those of us who are new to the planted tank thing (like me!).

We need to know the pros and cons of things like:
